Here’s what you can do to get the most out of your coffee beans:
Make sure the water you use is fresh and pure.
Normally, you should use 2 tablespoons of ground coffee for every 6 ounces of brewed coffee that you want to make. To make espresso, you generally use approximately 1 tablespoon of coffee for 1.5 ounces of espresso.
Always use the appropriate grind for the equipment that you’re using. Too fine a grind will lead to over-extraction, blockage of your filter, or small particles of coffee beans seeping into your cup of coffee. Too coarse a grind will cause under-extraction and a weak, bitter cup of coffee as the water will go through the coffee too quickly.
If you are using a manual device, use water that is just off the boil, so that it does not “burn” the coffee.
Always serve your coffee instantly after you make it; never reheat your coffee or reuse your coffee grounds. If you want to use your hot coffee later, pour it into a preheated thermos instantly after it’s brewed.
Make sure you clean your equipment frequently, so that coffee residues or mineral deposits don’t build up. That can ruin your future cups of coffee.
Make sure you never leave your coffee on the burner for more than 20 minutes. That will ruin it.
